NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Lions, Jaguars on the rise, plus rookie check-in

It’s already Week 6 in the NFL. Some things are clear. The San Francisco 49ers are very good. The Miami Dolphins are very fast (and probably very good). And some things are not clear. Two of the most highly respected coaches in the league in the last two decades find themselves near the bottom of this week’s Power Rankings. And the Kansas City Chiefs look out of sorts on offense despite winning. In the “Becoming Clear” category is how each team’s additions are affecting outcomes this year. For that reason, we’re doing a rookie check-in this week, although we’ve taken the liberty of expanding the category to “notable new guy” when warranted.(Last week: 1)Sunday: Beat Dallas Cowboys 42-10Should we do Sam Darnold here? San Francisco beat Dallas so badly Sunday night that Darnold got into the...

The Athletic has live coverage of Connor Bedard’s debut and the Blackhawks vs. Penguins matchupIt’s prediction season.Despite being a die-hard Cowboys fan, I predicted a Bills-49ers Super Bowl before the NFL season began, and I’m sticking with it, hoping the Cowboys prove me wrong. It’s actually the third year in a row I’ve picked a San Fran-Buffalo Super Bowl. Surely I’ll be right eventually.Oh wait, I cover hockey for a living. All kidding aside, here are some 2023-24 NHL predictions, most of which you as readers will be able to throw in my face in several months.Stanley Cup pickGive me a Toronto-Edmonton Stanley Cup Final with the Oilers winning Game 7 on the road. It’s actually the same Cup final prediction I had last April before the playoffs.I like the Stars and Hurricanes to complet...

Saudi influence in Newcastle: A story of property, prosperity and power

Newcastle is changing. It is happening on the pitch — from rock bottom to the Champions League, matches at the San Siro and Parc des Princes, meting out 4-1 thrashings to European heavyweights. It is happening at St James’ Park — exploratory conversations to expand the stadium, Strawberry Place back in club hands with planning permission granted for a fan zone, optimism paved into the walk up the Gallowgate. And change is happening in the city too. While, across the Tyne, the regeneration of the Gateshead quays continues apace. On Saturday, it will be two years since a takeover led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Inv...

When NHL players get sent down, it’s like going from steak to chicken fingers

Andrew Mangiapane was given a set of instructions when he landed in Stockton, Calif., home of the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate at the time. They weren’t instructions about fitting into his new team’s system and playing style. They weren’t instructions about handling the mental grind of a demotion, his new role, or adjusting to a totally new league. They were instructions from Stockton police officials, who had been invited to give the team a presentation on how to stay safe in the city.Rule No. 1: Don’t venture anywhere besides the rink, the hotel across the street where some of the players lived, and the movie theater next door.Rule No. 2: Don’t wear blue or red clothes because the colors are associated with gangs.Rule No. 3: “If you’re driving at night and you’re at a stop light and you s...

Celtic vs Lazio: The Champions League tie that became a political powderkeg

In April 1945, in the last months of World War II in Europe, Benito Mussolini, the leader of Italy, was captured by Italian partisans near Lake Como. Mussolini was executed and his body was taken to Milan and hung upside down in a square where a year earlier his Fascists had similarly displayed 15 local Resistance fighters. Two days later, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in Berlin.Granted, it’s not 4-4-2.And this may seem an odd way to introduce a Champions League match; it’s just that when Celtic host Lazio tonight, the image of Benito Mussolini and his name will again be prominent. Celtic-Lazio has become more than a game, more than a Group E qualifier: it is a clash between two fanbase cultures. When the two clubs met in the Europa League four years ago, Lazio ultras marched through Glasg...

Everton, 777 and the Business of Premier League Soccer

The acquisitions came so quickly that it was hard to keep up. An agreement to buy the oldest soccer team in Italy. An investment in one of the most popular teams in Brazil. Stakes in well-known clubs in Belgium and France, Germany and Australia. Each new deal was trumpeted by the Miami-based investment company, 777 Partners, that was hurriedly snapping them up.Then, in September, the investment group revealed its biggest deal yet: an agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Everton F.C., a founding member of the Premier League and one of the oldest soccer clubs in England.Suddenly, everyone in soccer had heard of 777 Partners. Beyond its name, though, little was known about the company. It said it had $10 billion in assets, but was so closely held that verifying that claim was difficult....
